Through the Hennepin Healthcare Post-COVID-19 Recovery Clinic, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation providers will work with each patient to identify the specialty services that would best meet their individual needs. The Clinic’s coordinated team approach will help each patient get back to the things they were able to do before their COVID illness. Multidisciplinary Long-Term Recovery

The new M Health Fairview Adult Post-COVID Clinic, part of the University of Minnesota Medical School Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, launched in December 2020 to respond to the unique recovery needs of COVID survivors. The Clinic intends to treat post-COVID patients who have either been hospitalized and are 3-4 weeks post-hospital discharge, or have not been hospitalized but exhibit ongoing functional deficits.

The Post-COVID Clinic will provide each patient with a virtual health assessment to identify predominant symptoms and rehabilitation needs in order to make an individualized treatment plan and refer the patient to the appropriate specialists. Featured specialties include physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, pulmonary rehab, cardiac rehab, neuropsychology, and behavioral health.

Acute COVID-19 Recovery

The ICU Survivorship Clinic provides centralized multi-disciplinary care for critical illness survivors, patients are seen by pulmonary/critical care specialists as well as a clinical psychologist.

Critical illness survivor patients are known to have prolonged, complex medical recoveries after ICU admission. Care is often required for symptoms of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, physical debility, complex medication management, residual pulmonary symptoms/side effects, sleep difficulties, DME needs (oxygen, tracheostomy care). Collectively, this symptom complex is known as Post-Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS).

The ICU Survivorship Clinic specialist will identify unique patient needs, develop a treatment plan, and refer to other services if needed.

Essentia Health Post COVID-19 Rehabilitation Program

The Essentia Health Post COVID-19 Rehabilitation Program offers services for patients suffering from long-term effects of COVID-19 illness. The multidisciplinary approach of the Program will look different for each patient and is a combination of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Therapists use objective and measurable tests to show the progress the patient is making. Patients within this program range from those who were sick with COVID but recovered at home to those who were critically ill and hospitalized. The Program can also refer patients to other providers who may be able to provide additional treatment, such as ear, nose and throat specialists or behavioral health experts.

The Program is offered at all Essentia locations.

The Mayo Clinic’s COVID-19 Activity Rehabilitation Program (CARP) is a program meant to help those with long-term COVID-19 health complications, referred to as “post-COVD syndrome” return to their pre-COVID quality of life.

The rehabilitation program provides treatment for a variety of post-COVID symptoms, including extreme fatigue, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness, and weakness.

Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute-Allina Health

Rehabilitation & Therapy

The Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute, part of Allina Health, is offering post-COVID care at several locations across Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The Institute is committed to providing holistic rehabilitation services to treat post-COVID patients who have lingering symptoms, whether after being discharged from a hospitalization for acute COVID-19 or exhibiting ongoing symptoms at home.

Post-Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation: Inpatient care is provided by a team of physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists including doctors, nurses, therapists, psychologists and behavioral therapists, social workers, and fitness specialists for those recovering from acute COVID-19 infection. Adult services only.

Post-COVID Rehabilitation Program: Physical medicine & rehabilitation providers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, and rehabilitation psychologists are available at this level of treatment to support full recovery from lingering effects of COVID-19. This multi-disciplinary team can help with issues ranging from fatigue, cognitive issues, and balance concerns to breathing difficulty, stress and anxiety. 

Post-COVID Wellness Program: This Program has been designed to establish fitness routines that target common COVID-19 side effects while also improving overall health. No physician referral is needed. Warm water aqua therapy is also available. Virtual options available.
