Multidisciplinary Long-Term Recovery

Texas NeuroRehab Center is prepared to accept patients that have recovered from an active COVID-19 infection but are experiencing long-term residual effects of the disease, whether physically and mentally, for their continued rehabilitation process in both inpatient and outpatient settings through their COVID-19 Continuum Care Program.

Texas NeuroRehab Center will address physical and psychological needs in patients that are recovering or have recovered from COVID-19, and help patients get back home, or to work and resume their previous activities. Patients have options for inpatient or outpatient services depending on their needs. The Program team will evaluate each patient and determine what the best level of care is based on their assessment and the funding source.

Patients may qualify for one of four levels of care:

  1. Long-Term Acute Care Program-Medically complex patients who may require ventilation or oxygen.

  2. Inpatient Rehabilitation Program -Patients require daily physician and nursing oversight in a hospital setting, and are able to do at least three hours of therapy a day.

  3. Inpatient Post-Acute Brain Injury Program – Patients are experiencing cognitive debility and are unable to return home and maintain needs independently.

  4. Outpatient (in-person) or Tele-Therapy (virtual) Program -Patients are able to return home, but still have therapy needs.

All four levels of care will include:

  1. Multidisciplinary team to address co-morbidities

  2. Participation in intensive rehabilitation therapy program

Post COVID-19 conditions treated at the Program include:

  1. Respiratory Complications, including: Acute Respiratory Failure, Pneumonia and Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

  2. Other medical complications: Stroke, Seizures, Encephalopathy, Acute Cardiac, Liver or Kidney injury, Septic shock, Blood clots, Rhabdomyolysis and Dysphagia.

  3. ICU related and other psychiatric complications: Delirium, Dementia, Anxiety, Depression, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Hallucinations, Mood Disorders and Cognitive Dysfunction.

  4. Lingering neurologic effects after recovery: Brain Fog, Dizziness, Headaches, Cognitive problems, Changes in sensation in arms and legs, Memory Issues, Concentration Issues and Confusion.

  5. Ongoing debilitating problems after recovery: Post-Acute COVID Syndrome, Fatigue, Inability to Ambulate, Inability to complete ADLs independently (eating, dressing, bathing, toileting), Debilitation, Inability to exercise, cough, shortness of breath, muscular weakness, sleep issues, vision problems and loss of taste and smell.

Multidisciplinary Long-Term Recovery

The UT Health East Texas COVID-19 Recovery Clinic has assembled a multidisciplinary team to screen, assess, treat and provide referrals for patients who continue to experience negative health effects from COVID-19. The Clinic’s team approach promotes seamless management of the recovery process.

Your initial visit will be in person or via telehealth to ask questions about symptoms. Next, you will be evaluated by the clinical team to determine your specific needs. After completion of the first visit, your needs will be identified and an individualized plan of care will be developed. Care plans will be communicated to you and your referring physician, if applicable. Additionally, referrals and coordination with medical specialties will be initiated.

Finally, the COVID-19 Recovery Clinic will provide an opportunity for its patients to participate in research efforts to combat long COVID.

Supplemental Oxygen Rehabilitation & Therapy

The O2 Studio is committed to providing supplemental oxygen treatment to help individuals with long COVID symptoms. The treatment offered by The O2 Studio consists of 15-minute cardio sessions, either on a treadmill or on a bike, while breathing oxygen from a mask. The studio offers a price of $125 for a 10-pack, or $12.50 per session.

The O2 Studio also sells systems for at-home treatment if people do not live near the DFW area.  However, they cost about $1600, so if someone lives in the DFW area, they can always go to The O2 Studio and try the service once for free and see if it is for them in order to decide if they want to continue the service or purchase the at-home system.

The University Health Post-COVID Recovery Clinic provides a broad spectrum of care for people who were diagnosed with COVID-19 and suffer from various physical, cognitive and functional difficulties. Multidisciplinary Long-Term Recovery

The JPS Health Network COVID-19 Post-Recovery Clinic is a new multidisciplinary clinic designed specifically to serve the long-term health needs of COVID-positive patients. It is a one-stop shop for patients to not only limit the number of times they have to leave isolation for treatment, but to get them answers about their care quickly.

The clinic has also been set up to help patients. with other health needs – such as recovery from injury or treatment of cardiovascular issues – who also happen to have tested positive. Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Psychology, and Physical Therapy are just a few services that are offered within a visit to the clinic.

The new clinic is designed to be flexible and adaptable not only in services it offers but in the number of people that can be cared for there. “The clinic is open to see patients every other Tuesday of each month,” Jackson said. “In the first few weeks, we’ve seen that the demand is high and we are committed to getting the patients in as soon as possible. When we receive a referral from the patient’s provider, our registration representative will give the patient a call and get them scheduled for their first visit. Depending on the outcome of the first visit, a follow-up appointment is made with the specific discipline that the patient may need. We are devoted to helping bring each patient to a full recovery.”

Rehabilitation and Therapy

COVID RECOVER is UT Southwestern Medical Center’s designated COVID-19 rehabilitation outpatient clinic that is run through the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. COVID RECOVER provides both in-person and virtual individualized support for those recovering from the long-term health effects of COVID-19.

The clinic will first provide a comprehensive physical and cognitive health evaluation for its patients before prescribing treatment including reconditioning and strengthening, counseling, group psycho-education therapy, and cognitive therapy. Additionally, the specialists at the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation center have developed a virtual rehabilitation program to offer support to all COVID-19 survivors. The virtual program provides information on exercises that are meant to strengthen lung and muscle function. The program is entirely video recorded and can be found online here.

To enroll in COVID RECOVER, your physician must provide a referral. Referrals can also be made through EPIC.
